Ever since I can remember I have loved the sound of flute music, either on its own or in an orchestra. I started playing the flute when I was 11 and since then I have taken a very relaxed approach to my playing. Despite all of this it is still the hobby I get the most fulfillment from. There is something in finally getting something right after playing it over and over and finally have it clicking. Whether it being able to reach that high note you’ve never hit before, or getting the timing right in a tricky bar or finally being able to add dynamics into your playing.

My flute teacher has just started up flute lessons again for 2016, and I am very excited about my first lesson for the year on Monday. I am excited about being able to play through some of the works of the composers of the Romantic period, and to try make it through the tricky ups and downs of the scales in the Kohler studies.

I think it is important to find something in life that is satisfying in and of itself. That which no other person can affect. It is important to have something that makes you feel like you are accomplishing something, to have something to work towards or to create. It also definitely doesn’t hurt to have a way to let your creativity fly, or to help decompress you after a hard day, week or month at work.

I am so looking forward to this year, and finally being able to sit my Grade 6 exams this August. To  improve, to express and to play music that makes me feel alive!

Where words fail, music speaks – Hans Christian Andersen
