Apple and Rhubarb Crumble


This recipe explains how to mix together the most deliciously soft, melt in your mouth apple and rhubarb fruit mix for your crumble. One you have completed this part of the recipe, throw on this exceptional crumble topping and you are away!


  • 8 apples
  • 500 g rhubarb
  • 1/2 c caster sugar
  • 1 T cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 c cold water


1  Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius.

2  Peel, core and cut each apple into eighths.

3  Cut rhubarb stems into thirds, so each rhubarb piece is about 5-6 cm long.

4  In a large saucepan combine water, apples, rhubarb, caster sugar and cinnamon.

5  Mix over a medium heat until the rhubarb has disintegrated to a mush and the apples start to soften. This will take about 10-15 minutes. While mixing start preparing the crumble topping.

6  Drain off any excess water (should not be much at all) then tip apple and rhubarb mixture into a prepared baking dish.

7  Once topping is done, layer on top of the fruit mixture.


8  Bake for 10-15 minutes until golden and crisp on top.
